8/27/26 fishing report

Where to fish?

We are seeing fluctuations in flows, therefore stay tuned to the USGS discharge sites. We are still in low water and would strongly suggest not to float fish anywhere on the Upper Rio Grande. Simply it is not possible! Currently, the Rio Grande at thirty-mile is at 45.3cfs, at Wagon Wheel Gap its 153cfs, and in Del Norte it’s at 192cfs. Rain has finally shown up in southwest Colorado. This has cooled things down a bit, which we are thankful for. However, with the flows in the River and Creeks we are still fighting high temperatures. This is up to each angler to monitor. Once you get a reading of 68 degrees fahrenheit please stop fishing. Stay higher up on the rio grande river, elevation (cooler weather) is on your side. We would recommend wade fishing anything from deep creek up to the middle creek public sections. Give us a call for creek and river spots and we will direct you to great spots!  

Guide insight:

Fishing is good right now if you are throwing the right flies! Hopper fishing is coming into play here on the Rio Grande river. Fish early at first light, this has been the best time frame for good hopper fishing. Fish don’t have the light yet to really focus on your fly-meaning they will be opportunistic and take advantage. Once it warms up a bit and the sun is up, tie on some droppers. Look for riffles and shelves. Don’t concentrate on the banks, concentrate on the middle of the river where the flow is the heaviest. Creeks have been epic!!!!          

What time to fish?

From first light  till about 1pm for the river. Lakes and some creeks are all day options(consult the fly shop and we will direct you).

We have only a few guides in the Creede area, until the end of the season. If you want to book a guided day please contact us in advance. As our trips are going quickly.

What to use? 

Hopper dropper rigs are going to provide the most success. For fly info please come into the shop or give us a ring at 719-658-2955.

Tippet: 4x game right now(have fluorocarbon with you for droppers). Some days 5x has been a necessity.
