Where to fish?
We are seeing bumps in flows due to the rain, therefore stay tuned to the USGS discharge sites. Rain has allowed some sections to be floatable but that is varied based on the day, so don’t count on it. Please call us if you are thinking about floating cause we are on the threshold line in sections where it is possible. It is still low water. Good news though during a tough season, we are seeing patterns of a lot of precipitation. Currently, the Rio Grande at thirty-mile is at 59cfs, at Wagon Wheel Gap its 247cfs, and in Del Norte it’s at 310cfs. We are back to all day fishing in the Rio Grande Basin. However, still bring a monitor as we are still in low water overall. Check your Temps consistently throughout the day. This is up to each angler to monitor. Once you get a reading of 68 degrees fahrenheit please stop fishing. Fish the main river system, all of it is fishing well. Our favorite right now is the public section between Creede & Fir Creek on the main river! North clear creek is our favorite creek option!
Guide insight: The river is fluctuating in flows, therefore the fish are changing their holding and feeding habits. The river always fishes well on a drop day. Bump days expect some difficulty. Streamers are starting to come into play as brown trout are starting to be in that pre-spawn mood(aggressive).
What time to fish?
Fish all day, no need to be out there at sun-up. A traditional 8-4pm day is great. Check temps!
What to use?
Mostly a sub surface game, bugs change depending on clarity and flow. Nymphs and streamers are your friends right now. You can throw bigger patterns than we have been the past month(little insight). Please come by the shop for exact patterns! We are happy to help you out in person.
***The shop closes October 1st this season. Please come by and get stocked up. We have big rain forecasts in the future so keep that in mind with your trip planning.***
