Weekly Fishing Report (May-6th-2025)

***The shop hours are currently from 8am-12pm, closed on Sundays. We will switch to normal hours come memorial day weekend. We look forward to a great season. Snowpack is definitely a concern this year, so please keep doing your rain dances. As always however we can help you give us a call.***

Where to fish?

The whole river is pretty high right now. Very clear but high. Wade fisherman please be careful, we would recommend going up to the Upper Rio Grande. Thirty- Mile CG and River Hill CG are your safest bets for wade fishing right now. As the current flow is 400cfs out of Thirty-Mile, this is a great wade fishing flow for the upper river. In regards to floating, the whole river is floatable right now. The wagon wheel gap station is at 1020 cfs at WWG and 1450 cfs at Del Norte. The lower river temps are a bit warmer than the upper temps therefore, we would recommend floating Palisade CG to 149 Bridge.  It is early season so recreational floaters please stop by the shop as there are early season obstacles that we can warn you about.

What time to fish?

This week we are expecting cooler temps overnight, temperature ranging from 23 degrees fahrenheit to 32 degrees fahrenheit overnight. Our day temperatures are ranging from 41 degrees fahrenheit to 60 degrees fahrenheit. Therefore, your ideal fishing time is from 10am – 4pm. Give the water a chance to warm up. Fish are scattered, some are in summer mode others are in winter mode. So fish everything thoroughly. Mostly streamer fishing and nymph fishing. With a small little BWO hatch around 2ish daily. Caddis look like they will pop in a few days, so make sure to have a few dries with you. If you like streamer fishing, now is the time for it!

Guide insight: Fish are scattered. When you first start off, target deep pools, as they are stacked in the morning. Throughout the day fish are starting to migrate to shelfs and riffles(need to be deeper), looking for about 3 ft in depth. As the bugs come out around 2ish fish the banks. Especially areas that are bank lined with willows.

What to use!

Streamers: Conehead Ziwi BLK SZ.4, Sculpzilla Olive SZ.4, and The One Olive SZ.4.

Nymphs: BH Twenty Incher SZ.12, Pats Rubber Legs BK SZ.10, Pats Rubber Legs BK/BR SZ.10, BH Hares Ear BLK SZ.12, Blowtorches, and Euro trash.

Dries: Hatch Match BWO SZ.18, BWO Ext Dunn SZ.16, and Peacock Caddis SZ.14.
